BERTHOLENE

Bertho01

Humans have been present in Bertholène since Paleolithic times. There is evidence of their presence at various times: polished axes, tombs, a lot of dolmens and a Gallo-Roman villa.

In the 13th century, old documents report the existence of a lord, then of a castle. The castle was modified several times, and was finally abandoned during the 19th century. Today, it has been partly restored, and a lot of clues and archeological artefacts were discovered. A large number of these objects can be seen in the Museum of Montrozier.

In the second half of the 20th century, coal, baryte and uranium were extracted in the region. A railway was used to export these products. Nowadays, the mines are closed, but the old railway line still exists, used as a footpath.
